Shoppers in Baildon have been lending their support to banana farmers in developing countries.

More than 450 people shopping in Baildon Co-op added their signatures to a petition urging the Government to work with supermarkets to charge a fair price for bananas, to reflect the cost of production.

Supermarkets in the UK have almost halved the price of loose bananas, while the cost of producing them has doubled. This is trapping many farmers and workers in poverty.

The campaign – part of a national movement by the Fairtrade Foundation – was run by Baildon Fairtrade Group which holds stalls at events throughout the year to raise awareness of justice and sustainability.
