A handful of protesters gathered outside HSBC in Manchester Road, Bradford, yesterday to demonstrate against the bank’s alleged financing of fossil fuels.
Campaigners in the Bradford World Development Movement created a ‘climate change crime scene’ outside the branch, to highlight the coal, oil and gas extraction they say is financed by HSBC funds.
Mollie Somerville said: “Banks are not going to quit funding fossil fuels unless they are required to, and we need government action to make them face up to the enormous damage they are doing to the climate and people’s lives.”
An HSBC spokesman said: “HSBC has a strong commitment to sustainable development and takes seriously the impact of carbon emissions on climate change. We regularly engage with campaign groups and welcome constructive feedback on our approach.”
