A legend of Bradford speedway has his farewell meeting this month – and one fan is helping to honour him.

Gary Havelock, who won the Elite League with Bradford Dukes in 1997 and was world champion while with the club in 1992, will say his goodbyes to the sport in Poole on March 21.

To help mark the occasion, speedway fanatic John Murphy, of Cooper Lane, Bradford, is sending some signed Dukes race jackets from the League-winning season.

He said: “I have the six Dukes race jackets from 1997, that the riders didn’t use. They were spares and are in perfect condition.

“The number three would have been Havvy's so this will be presented to Greg Hancock, as a thank you and to mark Greg having won the final race at Odsal.

“I am sending the Joe Screen number one and Mark Loram number three jackets too, so hopefully that will make some money for Gary.”

Numbers one and three are to be auctioned off. Greg Hancock currently races for Poole Pirates.

Mr Murphy added: “They are valuable as they are pristine and signed by all the team, with the number one indiviually signed by Joe Screen, the number three by Gary Havelock and the number five by Mark Loram.”
