A special school is to expand on to a second site to enable it to take in more pupils.
There is a shortage in special school places across the district and the situation is expected to get worse in September, Bradford Council’s executive heard yesterday.
As a result, the over-subscribed Chellow Heights Special School in Heaton is to become a split-site school with the creation of a new annexe six miles away.
The annexe will be created by refurbishing an existing building on the site of the former Netherlands Avenue special school in Low Moor, which housed pupils from High Park special school until they moved into their new school building.
Chellow Heights is designed for 110 children, but currently has 121 pupils. The second site will allow it to increase its total capacity to 165. A public consultation was held into the split-site plan, with respondents mainly supporting the move, and the executive approved the expansion yesterday.
