Athletes wanting to join a record-breaking number of runners in Sunday’s Epilepsy Action 10k have only until tomorrow to sign up for Bradford’s biggest annual road race.

More than 1,600 people have now entered this year’s event, which has become a permanent fixture on the Bradford calendar since it began in 2008, with 5,250 runners crossing the finish line to raise £235,000 for the Yeadon-based charity.

Last year’s race, which had to be delayed until April due to heavy snow, saw Tesfaye Debele smash the course record in 31 minutes and two seconds, and the charity has confirmed that the former Bradford and Airedale club member, who also won the 10k Bradford City Run in November 2013, will be running again this year.

Katie Stocks, fundraising events officer at Epilepsy Action, said: “This year will be by far the biggest race yet. Tesfaye will again be competing, along with many other first-rate runners, so we are looking forward to a close and exciting race.

“As the course is faster and flatter than previous years, this will hopefully boost runners’ times, and we hope to be able to give out a £50 cash prize for the first person to complete the race in under 30 minutes.”

Runners will follow a 10k route, starting at 9am, from Centenary Square to Frizinghall and back. The route will be closed to all traffic from 8.15am to 10.45am, with the course suitable for both elite and first-time runners.

Carl Foster of Epilepsy Action has called on the public to lend their support to runners, which will also include the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Joanne Dodds, and her son Matthew, who suffered from epilepsy as a child.

“People supporting athletes along the route makes the event what it is,” he said. “The feedback we get from runners is that being cheered on is what keeps them going.

Entry fees for the run, which is supported by Airedale Athletics and Sovereign Health Care, are £18, or £16 for runners affiliated to a UK Athletics running club.

Prizes are awarded for males and females placed first, second and third, and for winners of the veterans’ categories. A free technical running T-shirt will be provided to everyone who successfully completes the race.
