Legendary pop artists The Pet Shop Boys will headline this year’s Bingley Music Live in one of the festival coups of the summer, it was announced today.
The 16,000 capacity Bradford Council-backed festival, which takes place on August 29, 30 and 31, will see the duo, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, take to the stage as the most successful electronic act of all time, having sold more than 50 million records worldwide during their 30-year career.
Headlining the other nights will be chart topping hip-hop artist Example, and Yorkshire’s own Shed Seven, playing in their home county with special guest Gaz Coombes of Supergrass, as they approach their 25th anniversary.
The Pet Shop Boys have clocked up 42 Top 30 singles and 22 Top 10 UK singles hits, including ‘It’s a Sin’, ‘Go West’, ‘Always on My Mind’ and the iconic ‘West End Girls’, voted song of the decade for the 1980s by six million BBC listeners.
The six-times Grammy nominees have also won three Brit Awards, including the 2009 award for outstanding Contribution to Music Award, the Ivor Novello Outstanding Contribution to Pop Music and the 2013 Q Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.
Example returns to the festival after first appearing in 2010 and is the first artist to ever return as a headliner. He hit the big time with his second album ‘Won’t Go Quietly’, which peaked at number 4 on the UK album charts and saw two top 10 singles, ‘Won’t Go Quietly’ and ‘Kickstarts’.
Shed Seven were mainstays of the Britpop scene in the mid-90s, amassing fifteen Top 40 singles and four Top 40 albums, acquiring a loyal and dedicated fanbase with their crowd-pleasing anthems, ‘Getting Better’, ‘Going For Gold’ and ‘Chasing Rainbows’.
Councillor Andrew Thornton, the Council’s executive member for sports and leisure, said this year promised the most complete line-up in the festival’s history including artists from every genre.
“Bingley Music Live has a history of showcasing the very best of UK music,” he said. “Again, we have managed to book some really big names and catered for a wide variety of musical tastes, making Bingley Music Live a key event on the summer festival calendar.”
New talent is represented this year with acts like Bipolar Sunshine, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Eliza and the Bear, The Wytches and We are Catchers, recently signed to the Arctic Monkeys label.
Other highlights include Gorgon City and MNEK, fresh from their joint top five smash ‘Ready For Your Love’, Naughty Boy, and festival favourites Simon and Oscar from Ocean Colour Scene.
Bingley Music Live 2013 was attended by 15,000 people a day, with Chic featuring Nile Rodgers, The Human League and Primal Scream the headline acts.
Festival-goers still have time to sign up the special offer of paying for their tickets, which cost £45 plus booking fee, for under £10 a month by logging on to BingleyMusicLive.com.
