Westfield is steeled for action on Bradford's Broadway site

Work at the Broadway site

Work at the Broadway site

First published in News

Preparation work is due to start on Monday at The Broadway shopping centre site for the building’s steel framework.

It will use 6,600 tonnes of structural steel to support about 570,000 sq ft of floor space.

Developer Westfield yesterday announced that Thirsk-based Severfield-Watson Structures, a subsidiary of Severfield-Rowen, will undertake the work.

Westfield’s head of design and construction Keith Whitmore said: “Appointing a steelwork contractor is a significant step on the road towards completing the Broadway centre. I’m especially pleased that we were able to appoint a Yorkshire-based company to do this work, reaffirming our commitment to the local area, and to the county more widely.

“I look forward to seeing Severfield-Watson Structures make good progress on the steelwork in the coming weeks, and the centre beginning to take shape.”

I seem to recall some suggestion Bolton Road bus gate will be opened up for these heavy delivery vehicles. Seeing as they are or should be coming and going from / to that direction would it not make sense to suspend it or at least give these vehicles and exemption?

Westfield are certainly not messing about, been past this enormous building site on numerous occasions, they really are cracking on with this project. Good to hear that the steel structures are about to be erected. So glad that the fantastic buildings in the under utilized Little Germany will once again be connected with the rest of the city centre once this scheme is finished, hopefully the Bradford Playhouse will also get a boost from the regeneration going on in that area. The Odeon building will hopefully also be in the process of being refurbished by the time Westfield is nearing completion along with the old Police station leaving the magistrates court replacement as a possible scheme for the future unless government and council money can be found to go ahead with that proposed scheme. I believe the Midland Hotel is also about to be upgraded to a four star hotel.

Just looking at the picture above, to think that that concrete building in the background was built by demolishing the Swan Arcade. The Swan Arcade would have been a fantastic facility to have had next to the Wesfield shopping centre.

Indeed, I'm not sure who thought that concrete box was the way forward though, it doesn't seem to have any redeeming features that a few stick of dynamite wouldn't improve, such a shame but who's to say someone with an idea wont come in and buy and demolish that particular building and build something in keeping with what's over the road.

You are out of touch on the Magistrate Court move as the plan has been ditched a few weeks ago, is staying put and an office block planned for the old Police HQ..

If you'd have read my post you'd have noticed that I said the magistrates court move as a possible scheme for the future, I actually commented on that particular Magistrates court thread that I never thought that scheme would happen, but they do say never say never so I guess there may be a possibility in the future that those courts may indeed move. Let's be honest, they should move from their present location which isn't an appropriate location for them any more.
