A man and a boy were robbed in the street of their phones after three men fasting during Ramadan travelled round Bradford at dawn looking to commit criminal offences, a court heard.

A family row during the holy month led to banned driver Irfan Yusaf getting behind the wheel of a borrowed black Seat Leon early on August 1 last year, Bradford Crown Court heard.

With Yusaf, 21, of Park Crescent, Undercliffe, Bradford, were Atif Mahmood, 22, of Idle Road, Undercliffe, and Ali Rafiq, 21, of Stanacre Place, Wapping, Bradford.

Mahmood and Rafiq admitted robbing a man of his phone at a bus stop at 8.30am.

Their victim, who was on his way to work, was approached in Toller Lane, prosecutor Abigail Langford told Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

Rafiq tried to trick the man out of his phone by saying he needed to make a 999 call. Mahmood then grabbed it and Yusaf sped them away.

Mahmood and another man then robbed a 16-year-old boy of his phone on Preston Street in Listerhills, Bradford.

Mahmood, already serving a four and a half year prison sentence for drug dealing, admitted both robberies.

Rafiq admitted the second robbery only and Yusaf pleaded guilty to handling a stolen phone and driving while disqualified.

Mahmood was jailed for six months to be served consecutively to his existing term.

Rafiq was sentenced to a community order with 120 hours of unpaid work and a curfew order for a month. He must also undertake an activity with the probation service.

Yusaf, in breach of a suspended sentence of custody for dangerous driving, was sent to a young offender institution for six months and banned from driving.
