Bradford will take its place in history at the first global flag-raising ceremony to mark Commonwealth Day.

The ceremony taking place outside City Hall on Monday is one of hundreds being held across the world.

After the City Hall clock strikes 11am, the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Khadim Hussain (pictured), will read out a specially-written Commonwealth Affirmation, which will also be read across the nation and in Commonwealth countries worldwide.

The Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe will then be invited to raise the flag of the Commonwealth.

Coun Khadim Hussain said: “I am honoured to take part in this historic flag raising ceremony to commemorate Commonwealth Day. All local authorities throughout the United Kingdom have been invited to fly the new flag.”

Anyone wanting to attend the event is asked to meet at 10.50am by the flag poles in Centenary Square.
