A team of students at a Bradford school have taken their studies to a new dimension for a business project.

Eight sixth formers studying business at Bradford Girls’ Grammar School have been importing “2-D” bags from China as part of a school business initiative.

Made popular by celebrities such as Katie Perry, the bags are regular satchels, rucksacks and handbags, but designed in a way to make them look like a cartoonish 2D image.

Eight sixth-form students at the school – Aisha Karim, Zohra Zahid, Shamaailah Baig, Momina Mahmood, Sarah Zahid, Gahad Ashour, Aisha Hussain and Sabeena Hafeez – are taking part in the Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme – a year-long business initiative involving schools.

Teams have to set up their own business, chose a product to produce or distribute and then sell as many as possible through social media and at market events.

Proceeds are given to charity and the most successful group honoured at a presentation in April.

The Bradford girls chose the name “House of Quirk” and have sold more than 30 bags so far, and had to re-order from the suppliers after their original stock sold out before Christmas.

Aisha Karim said: “We wanted to do something unique and a bit quirky. We thought it matched who we were quite well.

“We’ve had a lot of compliments for the business so far.”

Sarah said: “We’ve had a mix of people interested, we thought it would mainly be young people and students, but we’ve had little children and adults too, it’s been quite a mix.

“The bags sold from £3 to £20 – we never wanted to sell them for more than that.”
