A series of activities are being organised to restore pride in the Barkerend and Bradford Moor communities in Bradford.

A campaign is being run by schools and community groups with the support of Bradford Council's neighbourhood services to improve the environment in the BD3 area and raise community spirit.

Proud of BD3 week begins tomorrow with a community event at Delius Special School between 1pm and 4pm.

In the lead-up to the clean-up week, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Joanne Dodds, took part in the annual Sant Nirankari Mission Street Clean initiative in Napier Street, off Leeds Road, last weekend and this week an environmental group in Otley Road and Barkerend was busy making bird feeders for people to help attract wildlife into the area.

Next week there will be litter-picking sessions around Westminster, Barkerend, Thornbury and Killinghall Primary Schools and also at the Emerge and Anchor Project in Otley Road. Areas around Dixons Marchbank Academy, Carlton Bolling College, Rochester Street, Karmand Community Centre and other faith centres such as the Madni Mosque and the Abu Hurrairah Madrassah will also be in line for a litter blitz.

Delius Special School, Lapage Primary School and Dixons Marchbank Academy will be cleaning up Myra Shay recreation ground on Thursday, March 6, at 1.30pm and Bradford Moor Park with residents on Friday, March 7, at 10am.

Carlton Bolling College will be working on an area its has adopted in Undercliffe Cemetery, between March 3 and March 7, to make it into a community garden.

School assemblies and play sessions are also being organised across BD3 to get across the message that a clean and safe environment is important for everyone.

Councillor Imran Hussain, deputy leader of Bradford Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see the whole community coming together to improve their local area and environment.

“This campaign is really helping to foster community spirit and engender pride in this part of Bradford.”
