Council Tax to rise as Bradford Council agrees budget

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Bradford Council leader David Green Bradford Council leader David Green

Bradford residents will see a 1.6 per cent rise in Council Tax from April after Labour-controlled Bradford Council agreed its budget tonight.

Council leader David Green told the meeting at City Hall that lasted more than two hours, the rise was needed due to substantial cuts in funding by central government.

An alternative budget, proposed by the opposition Conservative group, was rejected.

The Labour group’s budget won support from the five councillors in Bradford Independent Group at the vote which took place shortly after 6pm.

This Council are not fit to run Bradford. It receives a not inconsiderable amount of money from us, and I really do wonder where on earth it all goes.

All I see is proliferate spending on health, safety, and most of all education.
Enough is enough. Let people look after themselves. They dont need all this expensive fluffy protection. Schools do not know what to spend money on next.

Nothing is ever spent on roads, unless it is a road hump, signs, lines, or some other means to p!ss off the motorist. We still have to get about in cars, we are not (especially in Bradford) about to leap on our bicycles.

It isnt rocket science. We (The UK) are skint. We have borrowed too much. It has to stop. Money we are giving to the Council has to be much better spent.

All I will say in favour is that it could have been significantly worse than 1.6%

2015 will see the Tories get their comeuppance. It's their savage and destructive cuts aimed at the weakest in society that have caused this breakdown in our civic services.
The sooner the sociopaths are kicked out the quicker we can become caring communities again.

Have to say I agree with poster 36a why is so much money wasted on speed humps all over the district. I would much rather this money was spent on schools, old age people services, etc, etc.

In the village I live in of eldwick the road surfaces are poor especially on otley road in high eldwick and yet the council listens to a vocal minority and has wasted far far too much money on a dozen speed humps on warren lane. This being a road I have never seen an accident on in over 40 years of using this road!!!!!

I spoke with a highways engineer who admitted that these speed humps in warren lane were not needed but simply there due to the vocal minority!?!

Please bradford council stop spending money on wasteful environmentally unsound speed humps and spend this money on the services our residents need. If roads need speed cameras then fit them if not then spend the limited amount of money on services.

Cut already depleted front line services and keep council tax the same! Get a grip it had to happen sooner or later. I think further efficiency measures could be put in place also. As for spending on education being prolifate , I disagree, school budgets have been cut drastically, how can anyone want to take away from the education if children? I agree that sometimes schools spend money on the wrong things, maybe more stringent checks need to be put in place?
