West Yorkshire firefighters are still helping bring flood relief to the south of England despite a scaling down of operations.

Firefighters who were deployed from around the country are returning home as the weather conditions improve.

The number of West Yorkshire personnel has now been reduced to 15 and they are expected to be working in the Surrey area until Monday with the brigade’s high volume pump.

Ian Bitcon, who is commanding the West Yorkshire deployment, said: “Crews have been doing an excellent job, working through the day and night to alleviate flooding and save as many homes as possible.

“They have also been popping into local schools in affected areas to teach youngsters about how to stay safe during severe flooding which has given them a sense of security.”
