How to turn a spirited spinster into a willing wife is on the curriculum at Bingley Grammar School, thanks to the Royal Shakespeare Company.

RSC actors have been performing the comedy The Taming Of The Shrew to four different audiences at the school.

And tonight’s final performance is open to students, parents and anyone wishing to pick up tips on pre-marital management.

The overall event is being run by Bingley Grammar’s Year 12 Performing Arts students as part of their A-level qualification.

The group, Bingley Curtain Call, is managing the marketing, front of house and refreshments, as well as ticket sales to give them a real experience of what goes into putting on a production.

Students at six other schools, both primary and secondary, have been invited to tonight’s performance as part of the wider partnership within Bradford.

This collaboration with the RSC came about last May when Matthew Atkinson, head of creative and performing arts, and David Moore, director of English at Bingley Grammar, put together an application to win a three-year partnership with the renowned theatre company.

After a tough selection process it became one of only six schools in the country to be successful.

Mr Atkinson said: “We realised that the curriculum is changing and we wanted students to feel Shakespeare was accessible before the changes were put in place and we feel having this link with such a prestigious group helps enormously.

“Shakespeare is being integrated into lots of areas of the school, not just drama and English. The Art Department is running projects focusing on different methods of advertising and the Achievement Centre is getting a true understanding of Shakespeare’s plays through drama.”

Bingley Grammar’s links to primary schools are also getting involved in an Elizabethan-themed sports day for year five pupils, planned for later in the year.

The Royal Shakespeare visit is the second event to be held at the school since it won the partnership. In November last year The RSC put out a live feed to the school over the internet of David Tennant performing Shakespeare’s Richard II.
