U3A talk: Renowned local artist Frank Gordon will give a talk, A Life Spent Watching Paint Dry, to Settle U3A. It will be held at the Victoria Hall today, with coffee served from 10am and the talk at 10.30am. Visitors are welcome for an admission charge of £2.

Coffee morning: Settle Amateur Operatic Society is staging an exhibition of historical memorabilia at its coffee morning at the Old Court House, on Station Road, next Saturday, February 22. It will run from 10am to 12.30pm.

Photography group: The group will meet at Townhead Court on Monday at 7.30pm. The entire evening will be given over to a talk by Andy Latham on Developing Landscape Photography. This will provide an opportunity to discover the background to the photographs displayed at the Folly a couple of years ago.

Folk Club: The Three Peaks Folk Club will meet at Settle Social Club on Saturday and all are welcome. Singing starts at around 9pm and continues until late. Musicians and floor singers are welcome, or come along and simply join in the choruses.

Golf Club: Settle Golf Club requests that all current and past members check for any unreturned trophies. If they are in possession of any such items could they contact Kay Philipson as soon as possible on 01729 825340.

Women’s Institute: At the February meeting Phil Bamford gave a talk entitled What a Load of Bankers, which gave both serious and humorous insights into the financial world. He was thanked by president Joy Calvert. The competition for A Holiday Souvenir was won by Edna Tomlinson. The lunch club will meet on Wednesday – catch the 11.30am bus to the Boar’s Head, Long Preston. The walking group will meet next Thursday, February 20, and details may be obtained from Pat Whitton. The next meeting is the AGM on Wednesday, March 5, which will be followed by tea and a raffle.

Victoria Hall: Tomorrow, multi-award winning star Clare Teal will take to the stage in a show which celebrates her own musical heroes and heroines of jazz and big-band sound. Saturday sees the return of Reform Theatre Company, who will perform My Romantic History. This is a free event with donations invited on exit. On February 28, the Panjumby Jazz band will take to the stage to perform steel pan jazz with a dash of calypso. Tickets are available from 01729 825718.

Settle Music: The next guitar session will be held at Settle Primary School tomorrow and then on the second Friday of the month. Sessions run from 7pm to 9pm and the cost is £5 each. This is open to all guitarists.

Artisans Fair: The next Artisans Fair will take place in the Victoria Hall on Saturday between 9am and 2pm. There will be a range of hand-made goods for sale. This month the fair will have an art theme. There will also be the opportunity to sample homemade refreshments in the Hessian and Lace vintage cafe.

Big Breakfast: The next big breakfast will take place at the Friends Meeting House on Saturday at 8.30am. The speaker will be Michael Cullingworth, who will talk about his time at Mowbrays, the theological booksellers in Leeds. To book a place, contact 01729 825285. Tea and coffee is served from 8.15am.

Snowdrop Sunday: Settle Parish Church will host its Snowdrop Sunday this weekend. You are invited to come along and view the carpet of snowdrops in the churchyard. Home-baked light refreshments will be served in church from noon to 4pm with all proceeds going to the Aspire and Renew Appeal.

Messy Church: The next messy church event will take place at St John's Hall on Sunday, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. This month’s theme is Love rules. There will be an activity time followed by a celebration time and a hot meal for everyone.

Merry Go Round: Settle Rotary Club’s merry-go-round dinner will take place next Friday, February 21. This is an opportunity to enjoy a three-course meal in good company, with each course being served in a different restaurant. The venues taking part are The Lion, The Plough, The Hart’s Head, The Craven Arms, The New Inn, The Boars Head, The Gamecock, Ravenous, The Talbot and The Maypole. The groups will meet at 7pm at the dining room of Giggleswick School. Tickets cost £18.50 and can be booked via Rotary Club members or 01729 822445. Funds raised this year will support Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Settle Swimming Pool.

Organ concert: The next in the series of organ concerts at Settle Parish Church will take place next Saturday, February 22, at 7.30pm. It will feature Dr Timothy Raymond, of Bolton Abbey Priory Church. The programme will include work by Purcell, John Taverner, John Lambert and Dr Raymond himself. There will be a retiring collection.

Film night: The season of foreign films shown by TRAMPS at Victoria Hall continues with Cinema Paradiso (Cert 15) on Wednesday, February 26, at 7.45pm. Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, the film is in Italian with English subtitles. A film-maker recalls his childhood, when he fell in love with the movies at his village’s theatre and formed a deep friendship with the theatre’s projectionist. Please note this is a change to the film published in the brochure. Doors open at 7.15pm and admission is £5.

Gardening Club: Settle and District Gardening Club will meet on Wednesday, February 26, at 2pm.The speaker will be Mathew Smith, of Brighter Blooms, Preston, whose subject will be Zantedeshia Lilies. Non-members are welcome for a £3 admission charge.
