Charity urges people to take part in Three Peaks Challenge
People are invited to take a hike to help homeless people in Bradford.
Inn Churches, which provides temporary accommodation in the winter and helps people off the street year round, is appealing for teams and individuals to join its summer challenge.
The charity is working with Kuta Outdoors, which helps charities organise events, on its sponsored Three Peaks Challenge – The Big Walk and The Big Picnic.
Inn Churches co-ordinator Gemma Harwood said: “The challenge is to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks in a day and the overall challenge is to try to do it in under 12 hours.
“As well as people doing walking, we’ll be hosting something called the Big Picnic so people and friends and colleagues can come and support people when they might be feeling a bit worse for wear.”
Inn Churches, which has provided more than 5,000 temporary winter beds since it started, uses available spaces in local churches with volunteers welcoming, feeding and supporting the homeless during the colder months.
“We’re trying to raise awareness for Inn Churches, but also trying to raise some funds as well for the winter shelter which relies on donations. It costs £15 per person, per night and runs throughout December to the end of March every year,” Mrs Harwood said.
“We don’t get statutory funding for it, we do have to fund it ourselves.
“We’re trying to get people to think about it in terms of how many people they have helped, so if they have raised £180 they can say they have provided shelter for 12 people – it’s an amazing thing to say really.”
The 24.5-mile walk, on June 6, will cover 7,064 feet across the Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough mountains, starting and finishing in Horton-In-Ribblesdale.
Several people have already signed up, including staff from Experian in Bradford city centre and the Department of Work and Pensions.
Experian staff have supported Inn Churches before by helping to clear St Mary’s to provide work and shelter for the homeless.
