A warning about the dangers of Chinese lanterns has been issued for today’s Chinese New Year celebrations.

The celebrations mark the start of the Year of the Horse – and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is keen for people to celebrate safely.

Ian Bitcon, area manager for fire safety, said: “Flying lanterns can be very beautiful but they are a fire risk and we strongly recommend people don’t use them.

“There have been quite devastating fires caused by them and it is only a matter of time before life is lost.

“If you insist on using them, take extra care and ensure you read the manufacturer’s instructions. Also only use products that meet the EU standards.”

The fire service said lanterns could set fire to property or woodland if they fall to the ground while alight.
