A selection of print portfolios by world famous artists including David Hockney and LS Lowry are to go on display in Bradford.

The Artists’ Folio: as a Site of Inquiry will feature lithographs including Hockney’s A Rake’s Progress (1963).

The exhibition at Cartwright Hall art gallery in Lister Park from tomorrow until June 15, comes from Bradford Council’s print collection and focuses on the medium’s renaissance between the 1960s and 1980s.

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, the Council’s executive member responsible for Culture, said: “Bradford has some great lithographs and prints to display. Visiting experts have remarked to me before that there are some real gems in the collection which we should be proud of. So I’m glad we’re able to show them off to their best advantage in this exhibition for all to see.”

As well as individuals’ work, there will be three folios representing groups of artists brought together to celebrate events or projects.

The first celebrates the 2012 London Olympics and features the likes of Gary Hume, Bridget Riley, Rachel Whiteread and Tracey Emin.

A second framed intaglio set celebrates 25 years of London’s Angela Flowers Gallery. It includes work by Nicola Hicks, Glenys Barton, Renny Tait and Tai-Shan Schierenberg – all of whom have exhibited at Bradford museums and galleries.

The exhibition will be supported by events, including a free illustrated talk by guest curator Professor Paul Coldwell, from London’s University of the Arts, on March 29 at 1pm.

There will be a workshop that will include a visit to Bridget Tempest’s print studio in Skipton and the chance to print your own work at Cartwright Hall. The workshop is on May 14 and 15, between 10am and 3.30pm, and costs £25.

On March 13, between 10.30am and 3pm, there will be a demonstration of June Russell’s printmaking processes.

The Artists’ Folio will be officially launched on March 16, alongside the opening of Rossetti’s Obsession: Images of Jane Morris and Ukrainian Art: from the middle and second half of the twentieth century.
