An awards ceremony celebrated firms, faith groups and organisations who have been considering the needs of people with dementia.
The district’s Dementia Action Alliance held its first awards evening at Bradford College.
The awards are designed to be a milestone along the way to a group or organisation becoming officially recognised as ‘dementia friendly’.
Those getting awards included Bradford Teaching Hospitals Trust, Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, Bradford District Care Trust, and Bradford College, Bradford University’s dementia group, Dixons Allerton Academy, the Bradford Co-Operative Group, the city-centre branch of the bank TSB, Carers Resource, Hale, The Hive, Kirkgate Community Centre, the Diocese of Bradford, St Paul’s Church in Shipley, Idle Baptist Church, Bolton Road Gurdwara, Dementia Friendly Idle, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and four solicitors’ firms who have come together under the banner Solicitors For the Elderly.
Cathy Henwood, dementia friendly communities co-ordinator for the Alzheimer’s Society, said getting an award recognised a group’s work towards becoming ‘dementia friendly’.
She said: “They can promote that, they can put it on their website or on their door so people with dementia and their carers can recognise that that organisation knows a bit more about people with dementia.”
