Walks across the moors around Keighley and Haworth are chronicled in a new book by a specialist footpath surveyor.

Christopher Goddard has illustrated The West Yorkshire Moors with his own pencil sketches and hand-drawn maps.

He wanted to capture the distinctive style of Alfred Wainwright who is famous for his hand-drawn guides to the Lake District.

Mr Goddard’s book draws on his own experience over the past 12 years working as a rights of way and National Trail surveyor.

He has devised 21 routes that include parts of Rombalds Moor above Riddlesden, Nab Hill near Oxenhope and Warley Moor near Causeway Foot. Other routes go to the Wolf Stones between Oakworth and Sutton, to Withins Heights near Stanbury, and across the moors of Hebden Bridge, Marsden and Todmorden.

The book also outlines the geology, history and wildlife of the moors.

Sheffield-born Mr Goddard, who lives in Hebden Bridge, said his book was a guide to all of West Yorkshire’s open- access moorland, and his routes were often off the beaten track.

He said: “The book traces each of the paths and discovers the hidden features of these heights, unearthing the lost names and historical sites of even the most seemingly empty scene. Though the book is primarily a walking guide, its visual appeal and wealth of background information means it appeals equally to non-walkers.

“I have been drawing maps for as long as I have been able to hold a pencil.”
