The principal of a free school in Bradford, arrested last week as part of a fraud probe by police, will not return to his post pending the completion of the criminal investigation, its chairman of governors has announced.

Sajid Hussain Raza was questioned by detectives following his arrest at the Kings Science Academy in Lidget Green and later released on bail.

John Bowers, the school’s chairman of governors, said: “As a result of this investigation Mr Raza will not be returning to the academy until the investigation is complete and finalised. I want to assure all parents that action has been taken which will support the leadership team until the investigation is complete. For the immediate future Mr Haroon Hussain will act as Interim Principal.”

Last year it was revealed that a Department for Education audit at the school, which opened in 2011, had found tens of thousands of pounds of start up cash was unaccounted for.

Meanwhile, Bradford West MP George Galloway has called for Education Secretary Michael Gove to apologise for “misleading” Parliament over the background to the police investigation.
