Champion vegetable grower Noel Kitchen died on Boxing Day, his 65th birthday.

Mr Kitchen, who lived in Fell Lane, had been one of the most successful competitors in flower and vegetable shows across district. His long-time friend and fellow grower Mick Cunningham described him as a fearsome competitor who was always willing to help other people.

Mr Kitchen was born in Bradley and lived in the village after marrying wife Pat, before they moved to Steeton. He worked as a weaving overlooker at Fletcher’s mill in Silsden.

With children Michelle and Lee the couple spent several years living in Nigeria, where he worked as a weaving manager.

His widow Pat said: “He was always thinking of other people.”

Mr Kitchen had four grandchildren, Liam, Jamie, Jessica and Eliza.
