If your New Year’s resolution is to do more for charity, there are plenty of ways to get involved with the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal in 2014.

We started our £1 million fundraising quest to develop new cancer treatments in May last year and since then, your generosity has helped us smash through the £100,000 milestone.

But we still need your help to reach our ambitious target – either by supporting an event or planning your own charity challenge.

During 2013, Bradfordians young and old took part in a series of challenges, including a toddle waddle, a skydive, packing bags at Bradford supermarkets and hosting summer and Christmas fairs to boost the appeal.

Students at Bradford University even managed to raise £110,000 in donations and pledges from alumni during its annual telethon.

This year, plans are being finalised for a Crocus Week of fundraising – with more details to be announced soon.

Members of the University’s Students’ Union are planning a skydive to boost its coffers, while another charity bag-pack is being organised later this month.

All these events will help us buy the University’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics a new mass spectrometer, which will allow researchers to study the role of protein in cancer ten times faster than ever before.

It is hoped this state-of-the-art machine could hold the breakthrough to developing less toxic and more targeted tumour-blasting cancer treatments.

The T&A Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal is being run with the University, the Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust and charity Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Once we reach the £200,000 milestone, Sovereign will give the first of four potential £50,000 donations to the campaign.

A spokesman for the appeal said: “The T&A Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal has had a successful 2013, but we are confident that 2014 will be even better.

“There are plenty of events in the pipeline for people to get involved in and we’d also like to hear from people who have their own fundraising ideas.

“Do you have a place in the London Marathon and would like to raise money for the Crocus Appeal at the same time? Would your business or school like to do something to support the campaign? Are you planning a fundraising challenge, like a head shave or skydive?

“Your donations could help Bradford cement its position as a leading centre for the development of new cancer treatments and transform the lives of people fighting the disease across the world.”
