The Low Moor, Wyke & District Branch of the Royal British Legion collected £21,195.45 for this year’s Poppy Appeal, up 11 per cent from the previous year.

The money will be spent on helping ex-service personnel, from Second World War veterans’ right up to the present-day people wounded in Afghanistan, and supporting their families.

Group chairman Colin Robinson said: “My branch colleagues and I cannot thank everyone enough who made a donation. It was a magnificent effort at a time of cutbacks and hardship.”

Volunteers braved cold and wintry weather to hold collections at Tesco, Morrisons and Asda supermarkets across Bradford, with churches, shops and other businesses also joining the campaign.
