A man was attacked with a pool cue in a mid-afternoon rumpus in Bradford on yesterday’s ‘Mad Friday’.

The incident was revealed by West Yorkshire Police, who kept their followers on Twitter updated with incidents they dealt with on a day synonymous with excessive Christmas celebrations.

The Friday before Christmas is traditionally one of the busiest days of the year for emergency services, with a spike in alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and violent crime.

Chief Inspector Jaene Booth said: “Unfortunately while Christmas should be a time for celebrations with friends and family, we know all too well from past experience that some people take these celebrations too far and end the night ill, injured or in a police cell.

“Our hope is by getting an insight in to the situations that other people get themselves in to this will help others think about their own behaviour.

“We want people to be able to enjoy the festive season safely and I would remind people again to plan their nights out, stick together, make prior arrangements for safe transport home and not to make themselves vulnerable through binge-drinking.”

West Yorkshire Police’s Twitter feed – which they updated between midday and midnight – included a number of incidents in Bradford.

Incidents in the city included: a man drunk in the middle of the road near Forster Square at 5.26pm; drug dealing at 4.48pm; and the pool cue attack at 3.31pm.

In nearby Brighouse, at 3.54pm, police said a man was refusing to leave a pub, “falling over and breaking things”.

Police were also called to a fast-food restaurant in Guiseley at 6.15pm, where youths were “drinking outside and causing a nuisance”.

There were also reports of drink-driving and domestic assaults across the region.

Police had received 512 999 calls by 6.30pm yesterday.

The ‘tweetathon’ is part of West Yorkshire Police’s Be Safe This Christmas campaign which is highlighting a number of the issues that the Force tends to see an increase in over the festive period including violent crime, domestic abuse, drink driving and theft.

Late last night, police were called to a report of 20 people fighting and using glasses outside a Bradford pub. They were also called to a report of a man being aggressive towards staff in a Brighouse pub.

A police spokesman said late last night: “It’s obvious alcohol is having a big impact across West Yorkshire now.”
