Poignant pictures of a child suffering in the Syrian crisis sparked a fundraising event at a Bradford school.

A family fun day in aid of Syrian refugees was held at Byron Primary on Saturday.

The event was organised by children’s nurse Alya Sadique, who was touched by the photo of a baby sleeping in a cardboard box.

“It made me want to help,” said the 24-year-old, who is raising funds for the Hand in Hand charity.

A relative of Alya’s, who works at Byron Primary, asked to use the school hall in Barkerend Road for the occasion.

“I just took it from there,” said Alya. “Local firms and the community have been really supportive, donating raffle items or food, money or gifts.”

Alya hopes to raise about £5,000 from the day, which featured stalls, Asian food, bouncy castle, face-painting and art workshops.
