A new study examining hospital care has named Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust among five trusts that have longer waiting times for patients needing hip repairs over the weekend.

The study looked at a number of key indicators to assess the quality of weekend care in hospitals.

Nationally, the report found that people having a routine operation on a Friday are 24 per cent more likely to die than if they had one earlier in the week.

Patients admitted at the weekend are also 3.9 per cent more likely to be readmitted in an emergency and, overall, have a 20 per cent higher chance of dying on weekends.

The study said Airedale NHS Foundation Trust had seen an improvement in their performance at weekends. Airedale was also mentioned as having very low readmission rates for weekdays and weekends.
