Bradford has been ranked third in the country for its number of value shops, a new survey has found.

The RetailVision Report survey by consumer data specialists Callcredit Information Group used data from more than 17,000 retail centres across the UK to paint a picture of the UK’s retail landscape.

It shows that the UK’s largest retail destinations continue to maintain retail revenues, against a backdrop of increasing competition from online retailers and prolonged tough trading conditions.

One of the main parts of the survey shows that, out of the top ten value shop retail centres, Bradford comes third, while Sunderland is top and Newport is second.

Out of its 200 stores, Bradford has 19.5 per cent value stores such as pound shops and other discount retailers.

The survey also lists the top 50 UK retail centres, with Westfield ranking five for its Stratford City shopping centre and 12 for its centre in White City.

The news about Bradford’s ranking was given a cautious welcome by the body representing city centre shops.

Val Summerscales, the secretary of Bradford Chamber of Trade, said: “Value stores have their part to play within the shopping offer.

“If we ranked one of the highest, at least it shows new stores are opening and they are showing confidence in Bradford.

“The shopping public must be buying to fill that demand and it is all part and parcel of the shopping offer.

“I can’t say I am pleased about it but recognise it is part of the consumer spend.”

The report also states that major retail centres have further cemented their regional dominance and have put more downward pressure on the surrounding smaller towns and local shopping centres across the UK, where revenues have started to see some decline. These smaller retail destinations will have to work hard to stimulate footfall and establish their identity to attract shoppers.

Chris Duley, of Callcredit, said: “Successful national and international retailers are continuing to extend their store footprint but the wider retail environment needs to be right to attract shoppers.

Duncan Bower, Westfield director of development, said: “Value retail has a place in every market and the West End has two massive Primarks and we have Primark and other value retailers in other centres in the UK and the main message we want to give is that we will be providing an excellent shopping centre (in Bradford).”

Bradford Council leader David Green said: “This is another retail report that appears to be short on detail and explanations about the data that has been used. The Council is helping businesses to grow through its City Centre Growth Zone which offers business rate rebates if they create more jobs. A recent report by the CACI, a company that provides market analysis, has ranked Bradford as eighth in the country for retail expansion potential.”
