A lorry has hit a railway bridge and overturned blocking both sides of Park Lane in Keighley opposite The Globe pub.

The accident happened at 7.10am as the Volvo articulated lorry tried to pass under the bridge, spilling diesel.

The bridge carries the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway steam trains and not main line services, said a police spokesman.

The lorry driver was delivering stone, and was about 400 yards from his destination, when the top of the container on the back of the wagon hit the 13ft 6ins high bridge causing the vehicle to slowly tip on to its side.

The driver, 48, of Lancashire, managed to scramble from the cab. He was uninjured.

The bridge is thought to be undamaged, but the road is expected to be closed for several hours while the lorry’s load is removed and the vehicle recovered.
