Bingley Little Theatre is turning to a Hitchcock classic for its latest production.

Based on John Buchan’s novel, The 39 Steps is a thrilling stage version of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 classic spy thriller, staged as a comic melodrama featuring a bewildering array of parts played by four talented actors.

Dashing hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff upper lip and pencil moustache, is wanted in connection with a murder at Portland Place and is pursued by police across England and into Scotland.

His adventure involves three women – a foreign femme fatale, a humble crofter’s wife and a deb’s delight who all fall for him.

His escapades involve a milkman, a char lady, a porter, a paper boy, heavies, two refined Scottish gentlemen, a radio announcer, husband and wife hotel proprietors, a sheriff and a music hall double act.

Add to this a fiendishly cunning professor and his heartless wife who will stop at nothing to wreck all that Hannay holds dear, and you have a tense, fast-moving and action-packed thriller.

It runs at Bingley Arts Centre from December 2 to 7. For tickets call (01274) 567983 or visit ticketsource. co.uk/bingleyartscentre.
