A stone memorial commemorating two servicemen killed in Afghanistan has been unveiled in the award-winning Soroptimists Garden in Skipton.

It has been installed in memory of Sergeant Gareth Thursby, a former South Craven School pupil who was brought up in Skipton, and Royal Marine Anthony Hotine, whose grandmother Carol Smith lives in the town.

Sgt Thursby, 29, a member of the Yorkshire Regiment, died in September last year after he was gunned down by a rogue Afghan policeman while Anthony lost his life in a roadside bombing in 2010.

The memorial has been created by Skipton Royal British Legion chairman Alex Bentley and Legion treasurer Stewart Cracknell, using stone given by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
