Time to honour favourite stars in Bradford
The 2013 Telegraph & Argus Christmas Star Appeal begins today, giving Bradfordians the chance to pay tribute to someone special in their lives.
Hundreds of stars will be hung on the City Hall Christmas Tree to remember absent loved ones and celebrate those who have made a unique contribution during the year.
A total of 214 stars were hung from last year’s tree, and this year’s nominations will be showcased at the Christmas Star Appeal event at City Hall on Tuesday, December 3.
Proceeds will go to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, which this year is supporting Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure (BDSL).
The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain, said: “I will be hanging a star in memory of my niece, Nazima Tabassum Hussain who, despite being born with a hole in her heart and suffering with other disabling problems, showed great courage and determination throughout her short life, which tragically ended when she was just 16 years of age.
“She was a tower of strength.”
BDSL chair Hilary White said: “Each year we put one star up for the members we have lost during the last 12 months and encourage our athletes and families to do the same.”
To nominate a loved one for a star, fill in the coupon from the T&A and send a cheque or postal order for £5, to ‘The Lord Mayor’s Appeal’ to: Christmas Star, Lord Mayor’s Appeal. City Hall, Bradford, BD1 1HY. The closing date for nominations is Friday, November 22. Or you can call (01274) 434965 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, to pay by credit or debit card.
You will then be invited to the Banqueting Suite at City Hall on Tuesday, December 3, for a tea or coffee and a mince pie with the Lord Mayor to see your Christmas Star on the City Hall tree.
A list of all nominated Christmas Stars will be published in the T&A following the ceremony.
