Bradford is hoping to score a Curry Capital hat-trick next week, with a new Chicken Kahari crisp at the centre of the city’s bid for a third successive national title.

A celebration of the new snack was delivered as part of Bradford Council’s final presentation to the Curry Capital of Britain judges at City Hall last night, who after taking into account the results of a 250,000-strong nationwide public vote, will announce the winner of the 2013 award on Tuesday, October 15.

The brand has been developed in conjunction with two of the bid’s commercial partners, the renowned Bradford firm Seabrook and Akbar’s restaurant chain.

Bradford’s bid has proved too hot for competitors such as Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester in the last two years, and Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Executive Member for Employment, Skills and Culture, highlighted the importance of the curry community across the district.

She said: “I believe no-one can touch us in terms of curry, the industry is a real Bradford success story,” she said. “It is very important for us economically and a distinctive part of our tourism offer.”

Patricia Tillotson, who led the Council bid for the Visit Bradford team, said the four restaurants representing the district had also organised a fundraising dinner and been visited by mystery shoppers on behalf of the judges during the campaign.

“Bradford has some of the best Asian chefs and restaurants in the UK right here on our doorstep,” she said.

“Winning the title three years in a row is a very big ask, but I think this is our strongest ever bid.”

To create the new crisp, Akbar’s most popular signature curries were pureed and put through taste tests, with Chicken Karahi coming out on top.

Owner Shabir Hussain said: “We wanted to create a crisp that curry lovers across the country would enjoy, and this one’s authentic flavour really hit the spot.”

Seabrook marketing director Kevin Butterworth said the product was already on the shelves and selling well in Asda supermarkets across the country. “We hope our limited-edition Akbar’s crisps will help raise the profile of the campaign and champion the city’s wealth of fantastic curry houses,” he said.

“With our proud Bradford heritage, it has been great to be involved in a project where everyone has worked together towards such a unique common goal.”

The other restaurants selected to comprise the Bradford bid were Omar Khan’s in Little Horton, Kipling’s in Greengates and Shimla Spice in Keighley, voted Best Restaurant in England at the 2013 English Curry Awards.
