Bingley’s Five Rise Locks were alive with the sound of ukuleles as musical groups from all round the district descended on the visitor attraction.
There were performances at the top of the locks and around the cafe by groups from Haworth and Bradford as well as the band The Dukes.
The fun day on Saturday was held in an effort to attract more people to the pastime.
Robert Whittaker, who organised the event, said: “It was brilliant, absolutely brilliant. About 30 to 35 ukulele players turned up and there was a mixture of music, from folk songs through to blues and rock ‘n’ roll, even George Formby.”
He said the star turn was acclaimed local performer Bruce Russell, 87, who had played for 73 consecutive weeks at Batley Variety Club in its heyday.
He said: “He led a mass jam at the top of the Five Rise Locks, next to the Five Rise Locks cafe.”
Mr Whittaker, who is a member of many ukulele groups, said there was plenty of audience participation and lots of visitors had asked how they could take up the instrument.
