Use nasal flu spray, urge Bradford health leaders
9:50am Monday 7th October 2013 in News
Health leaders are encouraging people in Bradford to take up the offer of nasal flu vaccinations despite their roll-out being partially postponed in Scotland.
Some Muslim parents in Glasgow raised concerns that the nasal spray Fluenz contains pork gelatine, leading to part of its schools immunisation programme being delayed from last week until today.
Consultant in Public Health for Bradford Council, Shirley Brierley, said: “The flu is not just a cold; it is very contagious illness that can be really serious. If the flu is passed on to someone in an at-risk category, they are 11 times more likely to suffer serious complications and the consequences could even be fatal.”
Fluenz is available for all children aged two and three as part of the NHS’s childhood vaccination programme. It is also available for those up to 18, who are at risk from flu.
