Passengers left stranded at airport
Hundreds of passengers on a pilgrimage to Mecca were stranded at Leeds Bradford Airport yesterday after their plane landed without the required paperwork.
The aircraft, believed to be a Thailand-based Business Air Boeing 767-300, was due to depart for Jeddah in Saudi Arabia at 11am but it was refused permission to take-off with passengers.
Last night, a Department for Transport spokesman said: “We were notified that a flight from Jeddah had landed at Leeds Bradford Airport without the required paperwork.
“Following investigations, we have agreed with the operator that the aircraft can return to its origin of destination in a non-commercial capacity.
“The Department is working with the operator to find out why the necessary permission to operate commercially in the UK was not followed.”
The bookings for the flight are believed to have been made through Bradford-based tour operator Sky-Fly Connections. A representative of the company said there was no-one available to comment yesterday.
