Warning over impact of new homes on Ilkley Moor
8:00am Thursday 3rd October 2013 in News
The impact of increasing numbers of visitors to Ilkley Moor resulting from major housing development needs to be taken into account as planners formulate the Bradford District’s Local Plan, says a councillor.
Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, who believes a study of moorland wildlife habitats may block green belt development, says there is a need for a survey looking at the impact of greater numbers of residents visiting the moors for recreational purposes.
She said: “The moors have SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) status and as such require special protection against the impact of increased resident populations.”
The most recent strategic housing land allocation documents, expected to influence land designations in the Local Plan, earmarked green belt land around Ilkley as large sites for housing development.
