Kirklees ‘council tax rises inevitable’ warning
9:40am Wednesday 2nd October 2013 in News
Council tax rises in Kirklees are inevitable in the coming years, householders have been warned.
The council faces a £67 million shortfall for 2014 to 2017.
Council leader Councillor Mehboob Khan (Lab) said: “We will need to draw on reserves to cushion the effects on local people.
“But it is inevitable council tax rises will need to stay at around two per cent for the next few years. This is still below the current rate of inflation.”
The authority has already made cuts of £62 million – an overall budget reduction from 2011 to 2017 of around £129 million.
Conservative leader Councillor Robert Light said: “The biggest problem with Kirklees Council today is we have a Labour administration too consumed with the trappings of power to address and lead the changes Kirklees needs to make in these times.”
