Bingley Women's Instititute group all set to launch
A group of ladies are planning to better Bingley with a new women’s institute.
The first official meeting of Bingley WI will be held later this month and looks set to be a popular addition to the town’s social calendar.
More than 100 people support the group on Facebook, 110-plus membership forms have been sent out and more than 80 women attended an interest meeting in September.
President Jag Picknett said: “It’s so different to feel part of a community these days and some of the feedback we’ve got is that so nice that there’s an organisation that people can come to meet other people.
“We have two different aims that come together. The first is to provide support and a network for the women of Bingley. The second is to provide support and move Bingley forward as a town.”
Dr Picknett said this would be achieved by supporting different groups, working with the town’s chamber of trade and town centre manager and fundraising.
“We don’t want to be an all-singing, all-dancing WI,” she said. “We want to do the fun stuff, the crafts and speakers, but we also know that one of the roles of a WI is in the community. We want to be halfway between the really traditional WIs and some of the new WIs that are quite trendy and full-on.”
Although the group has been in the planning for several months, the threat to Bingley Pool has increased interest as some committee members are also working to save the pool – nationally it is the first WI to be involved with such a project.
Dr Picknett was expecting about 30 to 40 people to be part of the WI, so was delighted when more than 80 women, aged from 16 to 80-plus, went to an interest meeting last month. She said a unique selling point of the group was a chill-out room for members who wanted to be part of the WI, but may not want to listen to speakers or take part in activities.
For a membership form or to attend the first meeting at Bradford and Bingley Sports Club on Monday, October 14, from 7.30pm-9.30pm, e-mail email@example.com.
The group will meet on the second Monday of the month at the same venue.
