Thanks to T&A and other backers after ‘too-short counter’ dispute is resolved
A post office threatened with closure because its counters were too short has been saved after a passionate local campaign backed by the Telegraph & Argus.
Owner Kareem Sweiss wanted to sell the 40-year-old business on Westgate, Baildon, but was told its counters were 10in too short to meet the rules in new Post Office contracts.
In despair, Mr Sweiss temporarily shut up shop, which prompted protests at the PO’s attitude from MP Philip Davies, local councillors and hundreds of customers who signed petitions urging a change of heart.
And now overjoyed Mr Sweiss said new agreement had been reached, letting his buyer continue the business as before.
“I have received news from Post Office Ltd that Baildon Post Office will remain open on its existing contract.
“So that now makes it possible for the new owner to take over unhindered by the criterion that the counter was 10in too short,” said Mr Sweiss, who described himself as “elated”.
“The new buyer will hopefully take over in early December, but the biggest news for me is that I have left a legacy Baildon which will now keep its post office.
“As much as I own the premises at Baildon Post Office, it is the lifeline for the Baildon community, one that has served them for over 40 years, long before my time, but more to the point long after I have gone it will remain.
“This has been a great personal achievement and I would like to take this opportunity to primarily thank the Telegraph & Argus for championing the plight of this local business.
“In addition my gratitude goes to the local MPs, councillors and business people and not least the wonderful people of Baildon for the kind and huge support,” he said.
Mr Sweiss said he was also relieved to have the matter sorted as he gets married on Saturday.
Shipley MP Mr Davies wrote to the chairman of the Post Office to press the case.
