Fears that frolicking foals and ponies left untethered on a Council-owned development site could canter on to a busy Baildon have been ignored for more than a fortnight, says a concerned councillor.

Baildon councillor Debbie Davies (Con) alerted Bradford Council officers about the problem after spotting the piebald ponies on the Buck Lane site, which is being promoted for development as a hi-tech business park.

Councillor Davies said: “I was out walking more than two weeks ago and spotted four tethered mares and their young just left to their own devices on the site.

“It wasn’t their condition which bothered me, they seem quite healthy.

“My concern was that the foals and yearlings are roaming free and are very inquisitive.

“One of them leads the others all over the place and they are so close to busy Otley Road with no barriers to stop them.

“If they got onto the road there could obviously be a terrible accident very easily.”

But despite her call for action, the animals were still on site this week.

“I was e-mailed earlier in the week to say they were now aware of the problem and something would be done, but obviously not yet,” Coun Davies said.

“If they want to walk straight on to Otley Road they can, or go out along the Buck Lane bridleway where there is only a low wooden barrier they could easily step over.

“Also it’s supposed to be being sold to hi-tech businessess. It doesn’t look very inviting at the moment.”

A Bradford Council spokesman said: “We are aware of these horses that have been illegally tethered on council land.

“We are seeking to expedite their removal.”
