Two men and a woman killed as car smashes into hairdressers in Bradford
The first resident to reach the wreckage of a fatal car crash has given his account of the horrific scene that met him.
Three people died when a car left the road and crashed into a hairdressers in Thornton last night.
Despite efforts from passers by and the fire service to save them, two men, aged 27 and 32 and a 19-year-old woman died after the accident that saw the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution they were travelling in hit Michelle Champion Hair Design on the corner of Thornton Road and Kipping Lane side on shortly after 11pm.
Andy Rushworth, who lives a few doors down from the scene and works in the nearby picture framer’s, said: “I was the first to get to them, I was just in the kitchen and I heard it happen and felt the vibrations come through the floor.
“I went outside and saw the car sideways with the bonnet facing Thornton Road. My girlfriend came out in her dressing gown, she knows first aid. The driver was slumped over the passenger.
“The passenger had gone forward on to the dash board. There was nothing we could do for the driver - he had gone. But the passenger was still breathing - we tried to help him then the emergency services were here in minutes and moved us away. The tragedy is - it’s unbelievable - but we didn’t realise the girl was in the back, we didn’t know anybody else was there.”
But on arrival they discovered the driver, a 27-year-old from Denholme, the front passenger, a 32-year-old man from Thornton and the rear passenger, a 19-year-old woman from Denholme, had all suffered fatal injuries.
Watch commander Mike Smith from Fairweather Green station said: “One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Members of the public were trying to help the others when we arrived and they had been pulled out of the vehicle. We tried basic life support but the other two died at the scene very soon after.”
He said there was only one vehicle involved in the crash.
The shop suffered structural damage in the incident, but luckily was not occupied at the time.
West Yorkshire Police have now issued an appeal help to find out what led to the tragic incident.
A spokesman said: “Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward or anyone seeing the black Mitsubishi driving along Thornton Road or in the nearby area prior to the collision is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police's Major Collision Enquiry Team via the non emergency number 101.”
A spokesman for the police said there was “no evidence” of the car being chased, and that their investigation would try and determine whether the poor weather last night played a part in the crash.
