REVIEW: Rocky Horror Show survives the Time Warp again!
You’d think that after four decades a rock musical featuring a cross-dressing cast teetering around in fishnets and platform heels would start to look a little dated.
But, thanks to a slick re-vamp, this 40th anniversary production of Richard O’Brien’s affectionate homage to Fifties sci-fi has survived the Time Warp.
With a classy new set – the giant film reel unfolding above the stage was a nod to Rocky Horror’s B-movie mother ship – the show is sassy, sexy, deliciously irreverent and as vibrant as ever, while retaining its edgy cult appeal.
The audience has always been a vital character in this show, and although it’s likely to be livelier at the weekend, when the Alhambra is holding after-show parties, Bradford devotees didn’t disappoint last night.
You might wonder who would venture out in next to nothing on a wet Monday night, but crowds turned out in basques, stockings, stillettos and feather boas – and that was just the men.
The action raced along at a cracking pace, with Narrator Philip Franks doing a cracking job holding it all together. A master at bouncing back the obligatory heckles, he was the best Narrator I’ve seen in more than 20 years of going to this show.
It all rests on Frank-N-Further, a shameless, sex-mad, Frankenstein, and Oliver Thornton was pure class.
A camp, cocky, petulant prima donna, the Sweet Transvestite got the seal of approval from my sister, a Rocky Horror devotee who knows the show like the back of her hand.
Great performances too from Ben Forster as a refreshingly charismatic Brad and Kristian Lavercombe, delightful as Riff-Raff. Dani Harmer was a cute Janet, and Ceris Hine and Jayde Westaby lit up the stage as Columbia and Magenta.
One of the strengths of the show is its great score, from the rocking Hot Patootie, Bless My Soul to the haunting Don’t Dream It, Be it. The lively cast did it proud, and kept this long-running show shimmying through the Time Warp.
Runs until Saturday.
