Self-taught guitarist Liam Jarvis scoops top busker prize
A Battle of the Buskers ended on a sweet note for a self-taught guitar player who started out singing on the streets of Bradford.
Liam Jarvis was crowned the winner at the Battle of the Buskers competition held at the Waterside Restaurant & Bar, Shipley, which attracted entries from across the country.
“I started off, about five years ago, really just singing alongside my friend. He gave me a challenge because I’d said I wished I could play guitar. He said, ‘I bet you £50 you can’t play’.
“He leant me his spare guitar and I just got hooked on playing it.”
Within a month, Liam had learned how to competently play the instrument and can now play by ear. He will put his £100 cash prize towards a new guitar.
The competition, organised by the venue and Oxjam Takeover in aid of Oxfam, drew a large crowd and 12 musicians when it was held last Sunday.
The restaurant, in Wharf Street, now plans to run a monthly event to support up and coming musicians.
