Tributes have been paid to a former Bradford Salem player who was found dead on a Lake District fell.

Police were called after John Graham, 59, was reported missing from his Silloth home by his wife Helen. He had been out for a cycle ride earlier in the day and failed to return home.

Mountain rescue teams were sent out, and after two and a half hours of searching they found Mr Graham’s body on Lonscale Fell on Sunday. It is believed he had suffered multiple injuries.

Mr Graham had grown up in Bradford, playing for Bradford Salem in the 1980s and was involved in St Bede’s Scouts as well as working as a teacher in pupil referral units.

His wife Helen said: “The family are devastated, but wish to express their extreme gratitude for the tireless efforts of Cumbria Police, the combined Mountain Rescue teams and John’s amazing friends who all helped to find him and bring him home.

“He was unique: once met, never forgotten. A warm, genuine, inspiring and generous man. We had wonderful plans for our adventurous future as John prepared to retire.”

She said he was an “Ace Dad” to his two daughters Claire and Ruth.
