People in Queensbury have reacted in anger at plans to close their village’s historic swimming pool.

Queensbury Pool sits within the 19th-century Victoria Hall, which also houses other Council services such as the village library.

The plan unveiled yesterday conjured up memories of a previous closure threat to Queensbury Pool, which locals successfully fought back in 2009 as part of the Telegraph & Argus’ Save Our Swimming campaign.

Ward Councillor Michael Walls (Con) called the latest plans a “disgrace”, while Councillor Lynda Cromie (Ind) said it called into question the future of Victoria Hall as a whole.

Coun Walls said: “It’s local baths for local people. Certainly people I speak to will not go into town to go swimming, for a number of reasons.”

He also raised the question of what would happen to the old pool, given that it was part of the Victoria Hall.

He said: “They can’t demolish it, because it’s part of a building. What are they going to do? Board it up and forget about it, until it starts to crumble?”

Coun Cromie said: “It will be a very sad day if it closes in Queensbury, because we have got very few activities here for children.”

She said she very much doubted the new community pool for ‘south west Bradford’ would be in Queensbury.

She said: “The people of Queensbury will not let it shut without a lot of kicking and screaming.”

Councillor Paul Cromie (Ind, Queensbury) called the plans “another nail in the coffin for the residents of Queensbury”.

He said he expected all three councillors would be spearheading a campaign to save the pool.

He said: “The three of us will be working very closely together to pressure Bradford Council so we can maintain these facilities.”
