Bradford woman's sentence for stabbing mum delayed
10:00am Tuesday 10th September 2013 in News
A 22-year-old woman who stabbed her mother in the chest has had her sentence delayed for further investigations into whether she herself was a victim in their alleged frequent rows, a court has heard.
Susan Ayrey has been warned she faces a possible prison sentence for repeatedly knifing Elaine Ayrey in a heated argument.
Mrs Ayrey, 49, suffered a punctured lung when she was attacked by Ayrey, of Lindholme Gardens, Allerton, Bradford, on May 27 this year.
Ayrey pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to wounding her mother with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.
Yesterday, Ayrey’s barrister Rebecca Young asked for the case to be further adjourned until October 8.
Miss Young said defence lawyers had still not received a copy of Ayrey’s medical records.
It is alleged that there was a background of arguments and fights between mother and daughter.
Miss Young said it was being investigated that Mrs Ayrey had previously caused a head wound to her daughter, needing hospital treatment.
Prosecutor Ken Green said the Crown did not oppose the adjournment.
He now had up-to-date medical information about Mrs Ayrey’s medical progress, saying she was discharged from hospital into general care.
She suffered multiple stab wounds to her chest in the attack, some superficial, but one that punctured her lung, needing a chest drain to be inserted.
She had declined to make a victim impact statement but had written a letter to the judge.
Judge John Potter enlarged Ayrey’s bail until the next hearing.
“I am not giving you any indication of sentence,” he told her.
He said he would await further medical reports so that Miss Young could put forward as much mitigation as possible.
Ayrey is on bail on condition that she does not contact prosecution witnesses or enter Keighley.
Miss Young told an earlier hearing that Ayrey accepted that an argument with her mother developed into a fight and she went to the kitchen and armed herself.
