Shipley woman shocked by burglar under bed
8:20am Saturday 7th September 2013 in News
A shocked woman who caught a burglar hiding under her bed would be haunted by the terrifying experience, a judge said yesterday.
The householder shouted out in alarm when she saw a man concealed in her bedroom, clutching her mobile phone. Czech national Marian Gabor was jailed for eight months at Bradford Crown Court after Judge David Hatton QC told him: “Offences of house burglary are rife in this area and cannot be tolerated.”
Gabor, 30, who now lives in Cardiff, pleaded guilty to burgling a flat in Laburnum Road, Shipley, on May 31.
The court heard that the woman was in on her own when she heard a noise at the back of her flat.
Her bedroom window was standing open and her mobile phone gone.
She heard the phone beep as if it had been switched on and found Gabor hiding under her bed.
“She was shocked and shouted out for her partner – to make him believe there was someone else in the house,” prosecutor Sharon Amesu told the court.
Gabor escaped out of the window. He was caught when his footwear matched prints left at the flat. On the day of the burglary, he had drunk a lot of spirits and saw the open window.
Judge Hatton said: “Burglary of people’s homes, is a very serious offence. For that reason, almost invariably results in a prison sentence.”
