Allerton mums nominated for Community Stars awards
Mums with a ‘flare’ for fashion and getting others to try their hand at being creative are among nominees for the Telegraph & Argus Community Stars Awards.
Loretta McIntosh, 30, and friend Rosina Tariq, 25, both of Allerton, Bradford, are on a mission to inspire communities across Bradford and bring people together through the joy of making things.
The pair first met at a Supermums group at Cafe West on the estate just over one year ago and got a group of local women together to put on a community fashion show featuring items made from recycled clothes, bedding and other household items.
The event was such a success, attracting a massive turnout despite a heavy snowfall, that the two decided to run other sewing and making classes around the area as a way of encouraging community spirit, people learning new skills andexpressing themselves.
The initiative has been mostly self-funded with some support from a Near Neighbours grant and big plans to put on more community fashion shows in the future with the dream of a major showcase fashion event at Bradford’s City Park, and more sponsors are needed.
Miss McIntosh said: “It’s great seeing people getting satisfaction having made something for themselves, they feel so happy.
“It’s all the little positives that add up and make what we are doing worthwhile.”
They were nominated for a Community Stars award by Julie Longden, of Cafe West.
The awards, run by the Telegraph & Argus with Braford Council, are set up to celebrate the work of unsung heroes.
Mrs Longden said: “Loretta and Rosina are kind and generous to the core. They are very powerful individuals who have modelled for other women how they can make a difference within their community. I think this award would give them some of the recognition they deserve.”
Categories include good neighbours, volunteers, fundraisers, community groups, young active citizens and community champions. The extended closing date for nominations is Monday, September 9, and the winners will be announced at City Hall on December 4.
