Families warned of Ilkley river dangers
9:00am Thursday 5th September 2013 in News
Police are warning families of the dangers of going into the River Wharfe after a five-year-old girl was rescued close to popular Ilkley visitor areas.
Bradford youngster Lily Waddington was “close to drowning” when she was pulled from the water by an Otley man who dived in to save her, say police.
Lily, who is now said to be fully recovered, got into difficulties paddling the river when visiting the town with her grandparents on Thursday, August 22.
Head of Ilkley’s neighbourhood policing team, Inspector Sue Sanderson, this week made a plea to families to keep a close eye on children playing by the fast-flowing river.
Insp Sanderson said: “She was very, very close to drowning.
“Luckily it was just in the nick of time. The ambulance came, the gentleman himself revived her, and was able to get her to hospital.”
